Fragola fragola fragola

So far this summer Capogiro has offered three varieties of Strawberry (Fragola) sorbetto. They have offered regular Strawberry, Strawberry with Tequila and Strawberry with Tarragon. Capogiro starts off with really great fruit and doesn’t add any artificial flavors so often times the plain fruit is very delicious on its own. This is definitely true for the strawberry sorbetto. Years ago I remember trying froz-fruit pops when they first came out. Back then they used whole fruit and very little else, I remember the very different feeling of eating real frozen fruit rather than the artificially flavored strawberry pops that I had been getting in the candy store and from the ice cream truck. The plain strawberry (Fragola) brings back the memory of having frozen strawberry for the first time. The taste is pure like biting into a sun ripened strawberry you have just picked yourself and somehow froze instantly in your hand. Of course the sorbetto is a creamy and smooth as all of their other sorbettos but somehow the metaphysical feeling of eating the juicy soft fruit comes through. The Strawberry with Tequila is really good too, but in a different way. The tequila adds a tartness to the strawberry that I really appreciate. It’s like a really good margarita only much less grainy and without the hangover afterwards, that is unless you eat it so fast you get brain freeze. Take your time with it as the flavors play on each other and the tart bite at the back of your mouth is really nice when you let it build slowly. That brings me to Strawberry with Tarragon. Usually I love the sorbettos with herbs. The Pineapple mint is one of my favorites and so is the Rosemary Honey Goats Milk. In this case however I feel that the tarragon is too strong for the strawberry. It is basically transformed into a sweetener against the potent herb. The herb itself is not bad tasting and is an interesting use of the normally savory herb but I would have rather seen the strawberry come through more. Perhaps a better pairing would have been a lemony herb like lemongrass or lemon thyme with the strawberry. If however you are tired of strawberry because of its neopolitan flavor status and want to shake things up a bit then the strawberry tarragon is not a bad choice but for me Strawberry is my top choice with Strawberry tequila following a short distance behind.

  1. You forgot Fragola con Crema aka Strawberries and Cream! A tasty flavor, but i prefer Fragola sorbetto with Fior di Latte gelato - that way i can control the combination.

  2. So I was wrong about the three Strawberry flavors. There are actually four so far. I had the Strawberries with cream today. It was good but I don't think I like the flavor not because it wasn't done well but because I was never that into Strawberry milkshakes which is what it tasted like to me. It also tasted like a natural version of Strawberry Quik, although I am sure they would not be flattered to hear it.
