The Beginning of an Obsession

I believe that I’m the lone New Yorker on here who by a wicked twist of fate while visiting O sampled a small bite of heaven in the form of Capogiro’s pineapple mint (Ananas Con Menta). I’ve always had an infatuation for mint. Whether it’s spearmint, peppermint, or the occasional gingermint if I can find it I love it all. On any given day I may even smell like mint thanks to Dr. Bronner’s magic soap. I also love pineapple; it’s my favorite fruit. There’s just one little problem, I found out while visiting family in Jamaica and ingesting 2 full pineapples on the beach that I’m unfortunately allergic to it. But me give up something I love just because of a pesky allergy!? Never! That’s what Benadryl is for. So when I had that first lick from that mini-cone it was like tasting frozen tears of god but now I’m not sure if it wasn’t leading me to and endless purgatory. What does a girl from the Bronx do when she is craving Capogiro’s? I get back to NY and O sends me their URL and tells me they update daily. Why o why did he do that? Sweet sweetness, I see they sell pints at my local Whole Foods in White Plains, NY. But I can’t go all the way to White Plains just for a pint of gelato can I? So I, under completely false pretenses invite a friend to go to The Cheesecake Factory which is attached to Whole Foods. I have a small simple appetizer because all I can think of throughout lunch is finding out what flavors Whole Foods has. I casually say to my friend as we’re leaving and walking past Whole Foods “Do you mind if we stop in?” “No problem” she says “I’d like to look around too.” Oh bliss, no more waiting. I walk in with my friend and am determined to lose her and quickly do. I find the freezer section more quickly than I’ve ever found anything in a supermarket. I stare at the ice creams, sorbets and gelatos and can’t find anything that says capogiro’s anywhere and finally…… eureka (yes I said it); I open the door and stare at the flavors. There’s too much to choose from. Rosemary Honey Goat’s Milk, Blood Orange, Bourbon Pear, Menta Stracciatella, (sadly no pineapple mint) my body is shaking from being so cold. Then I see the price $9.99 for a pint! I close the door and start asking myself is it worth it for that divine taste. I could almost hear my grandmother’s voice telling me not to buy it if I don’t have a coupon. I begin to walk away from the freezer section then a weakness compels me back, reminding me of how much I loved blood oranges when I went to Italy years before, I walk back standing just inches from the freezer door and stare. I leave and walk back at least 3 times until I turn to see that the cashier at the not at all busy register facing the freezer section is watching my little performance. My cell phone rings. I’ve completely forgotten that I came there with someone. She’s looking for me. I walk towards her. She asks where have I been and feeling ashamed I lie and tell her that I’ve just been browsing. She’s ready to go, we start to leave and then one last impulse pulls me back. I tell her that she has to wait that I forgot there was one thing I wanted. I sprint back, pick up the Blood Orange and take it straight to the register. The cashier rings it up and says “This can’t be right!? It’s scanning $9.99 let me get a price check.” I hang my head low and respond “that’s the right price.” “Are you sure? Is it that good” asks the concerned cashier. “It’s that good” I say not even able to make eye contact. I pay, now feeling even more ashamed at my spending and slowly walk out of the store however to all those who haven’t tasted Capogiro’s don’t worry, take it from me, the shame washes away with the first spoonful.

Side note: I apologize for the length, you’ll never see a post this long again but I had to give my journey into becoming a Capogiro’s junky a proper account.

  3. Don't be ashamed! There's no shame in enjoying the finer things in life. The only shame belongs to those who just don't get it. =)

If you have a hankering that Whole Foods won't fill, Capogiro's website will ship you pints, anywhere in the country!
